Lewis Hamilton and Sky Sports F1 support MSA road safety initiative

Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team driver Lewis Hamilton is backing a new initiative from the Motor Sports Association (MSA) designed to highlight key road safety messages among young people.
The governing body of UK motor sport is launching a film competition for young people that will use the motor sport theme to draw attention to important road safety issues. The campaign will receive further support from Sky Sports F1, which is helping to raise the initiative’s profile via coverage in its award-winning programmes.
Road accidents are still the single biggest killer among 16- to-24-year-olds in the UK. The MSA project – part of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile’s (FIA) Action for Road Safety campaign – aims to tackle this by creating engaging short films to highlight the ‘10 Golden Rules for Safer Motoring’:

  • Buckle up
  • Respect the Highway Code
  • Obey the speed limit
  • Check tyre pressures
  • Drive sober
  • Protect children
  • Pay attention
  • Stop when tired
  • Wear a helmet (on two wheels)
  • Be courteous.

Working with the FIA, the MSA has created a special competition open to young people within schools, colleges and universities within two age categories – 14 to 18 and 19 to 24 – who are invited to create a short film of up to 90 seconds duration to bring to life one of the FIA’s 10 Golden Rules.
The films will be judged by a panel of experts including 2008 F1 world champion Hamilton, Sky Sports F1 presenters and representatives from the MSA.
The winners will be announced during the British Grand Prix weekend (3-6 July), with the two winning teams joining Hamilton at Silverstone to receive a £2,000 prize for their educational establishment’s film or media studies unit, plus a driving experience day at the Northamptonshire circuit. The winning films will be broadcast during Sky Sports F1’s programming.
Meanwhile four runners-up (two per age category) will each receive a cash prize for their school/college/university and will be invited to attend a British motor sport event of their choice.
Ben Taylor, MSA Director of Development and Communications, said: “This competition provides an exciting opportunity to engage with young people in a very practical way and creates a fun but educational approach to the road safety message through the medium of motor sport. Due to the very nature of our sport, safety is absolutely paramount and developments in vehicle and venue design as well as driver safety equipment, largely through the great work of the FIA Institute, have become very significant.
“All motor sport competitors recognise that there is a time and a place for driving at speed or in competition and that is in a regulated and controlled environment at a track or similar motor sport venue. As a sport, we must encourage people to take responsibility for their own safety and that of other road users.”
